Freeman’s Creative is looking to grow our team! We are Durham’s source for fabric, yarn, and other handcraft supplies. We are located in the Lakewood Shopping Center, near the Scrap Exchange. Our focus is on small, independent companies and natural, easy care, and beginner-friendly product lines.

Retail Manager

June 2026; accepting applications through 6/28. Start date mid-July

This is a full-time hourly position, Tuesday through Saturday, 35+ hours per week. Pay starts at $20/hr along with a generous employee discount and PTO after 3 months.

The person in this position will be responsible for ensuring standards of customer support, executing merchandising and store display updates, maintaining inventory levels in collaboration with the operations team, as well as implementing, documenting, and communicating systems and processes to the team. The role will also occasionally involve assisting with hiring and training new staff members. 

General staff responsibilities include assisting customers in selecting materials and patterns, cutting fabric and winding yarn, filling online orders via Shopify, answering questions via phone, and checking out customers. Employees also maintain cleanliness of the store, enter and label inventory, restock products, and other tasks as necessary. Employees do spend most shifts on their feet, and there is some lifting of boxes less than 50 pounds. This position will also be responsible for opening and closing the store, including cash-handling responsibilities.

Ideal candidates have a working knowledge and interest in both sewing and either knitting or crochet.  Employees need to answer questions about yarn weights, match suitable fabric to patterns, and help customers select colors and designs that meet their needs.

Keyholder

June 2026; accepting applications through July 5. Start date in mid-July

This is a part-time position with weekend hours. We are looking for someone who can work Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, around 24 hours a week. Pay starts at $17/hr along with a generous employee discount and PTO after 3 months.

Main responsibilities include assisting customers in selecting materials and patterns, cutting fabric and winding yarn, filling online orders via Shopify, answering questions via phone, and checking out customers. Employees also maintain cleanliness of the store, enter and label inventory, restock products, and other tasks as necessary. Employees do spend most shifts on their feet, and there is some lifting of boxes less than 50 pounds. Keyholders are responsible for opening and closing the store, including cash-handling responsibilities.

Ideal candidates have a working knowledge and interest in both sewing and either knitting or crochet.  Employees need to answer questions about yarn weights, match suitable fabric to patterns, and help customers select colors and designs that meet their needs. Employees should be self-directed, communicative, and detail oriented.

Retail experience is not required, as we believe that if we are helping folks solve their problems, the selling part will take care of itself. Patience and empathy go a long way towards providing a positive experience for customer and staff alike. Weekend Shop Assistant
