Learn to Sew Camp: Playhouse Accessories (4-day, ages 8-12)

June 23-26, 9:30 AM- 12:30 PM, $235

This session is for children ages 8 to 12.

Learn to sew in this four-day camp! We will design clothes and accessories for stuffed toys and dolls of all sizes! Students will learn how to plan their designs, cut fabric, and sew by hand and on the sewing machine with the aid of the teacher. We will cover machine parts and safety. All supplies included. No prior sewing experience necessary.

Bring your own machine in good, working condition or rent a classroom machine.

Please bring water in a container with a lid and a snack.

Garment Sewing Foundations (4-Day, Adults)

July 7-10, 10 AM-1 PM, $204

This session is for adults (18+).

Get started on your garment sewing journey in this four-day camp! We will use the Matchy Matchy Sewing Book to start sewing garments in woven fabric, from taking your measurements to cutting the fabric to making pants! We will sew the Rodeo Pants and cover additional garment sewing skills that students are interested in. Students should be comfortable sewing independently by machine.

NOTE: the pattern for the Rodeo Pants is a PDF. You can print at home and tape your pieces together in advance of the camp, or join a group order for large format printing BY JUNE 30 at the latest. The cost will be ~$8 for printing; email hello@freemanscreative.com to be added to the order.

~ 3-4.5 yards of midweight woven fabric, prewashed (linen, light denim, light canvas, light twill)

-1-1.5 yards of 1.5 " elastic

-Thread to match

-A fresh machine needle (80/12)

Bring your own machine in good, working condition or rent a classroom machine. Our classroom has all basic sewing supplies, but students may prefer to bring their own kit (scissors, pins, marking tools, measuring tools)


Beginner Quilting Camp (4-Day, Ages 8-12)

July 14-17, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM, $255

This session is for children ages 8 to 12.

Explore the heritage craft of quilting! In this machine-based camp, students will start by making simple blocks and move to improv patchwork, a log cabin potholder, and a lap quilt in the course of the week. All supplies included, although fabric and scraps from home are welcome. All skill levels welcome, but no prior sewing experience is necessary.

Quilting Exploration Camp (4-Day, Adults)

July 21-24, 10 AM-1 PM, $205

This session is for adults (18+).

Dedicate some time to planning, starting, or assembling quilts or quilt garments! We'll start with quilting history and inspiration quilts and images as we explore quilting by hand and machine. If you have quilt blocks or components, bring those as well as any ideas and inspiration. We will work through a number of small sample blocks, and travel wherever the inspiration leads! Students should be comfortable sewing independently.

* We will not be assembling full size quilts, but can go over any techniques of interest in a sample scale.

Supplies:

-Bring any quilt blocks, patterns, books, inspiration, scrap fabric, or other supplies you would like to incorporate into your quilt exploration. We will start off with improv pieced blocks, which could become a future quilt, tote bag, pillow, or part of a garment.

-Machine sewing thread

-A fresh machine needle

Bring your own machine in good, working condition or rent a classroom machine. Our classroom has all basic sewing supplies, but students may prefer to bring their own kit (scissors, pins, marking tools, measuring tools)


Kids’ Upcycling Camp (4-Day, Ages 10-14)

July 28-31, 9:30 AM- 12:30 PM, $225

This session is for children ages 10-14.

Are you a kid who wants to customize your clothes to fit your style? Let's upcycle a pair of pants! Bring a pair of pants to alter, as well as scrunchies, headbands, and other accessories. We'll also mend and embellish items from your closet using applique, trims, and upcycling techniques. Students should have previous machine sewing experience.

Bring your own machine in good, working condition or rent a classroom machine.

Bring a pair of pants that can be cut and altered, and 1-2 items from your closet that need mending or that you want to embellish. All other supplies are included.

No Fear Serger Camp (4-Day, Adults)

August 4-7, 10 AM-1 PM, $230

This session is for adults (18+).

Re-acquaint yourself with your serger and take your serger skills from nervous to no fear! We will cover threading practice, finishing tips and tricks, pattern recommendations, fabric choices, and needles and thread. We will use our skills to make underwear, and spend the rest of our time serging a garment of your choice.

Instructor River Takada has 10+ years of experience using a serger for clothing and production sewing. Bring your functional, tested serger and refresh the basics!

Supplies:

-Your working serger and manual

-4 spools of serger thread

-1 yard of knit fabric (4 way stretch, prewashed)

-Tweezers

-Fabric for personal projects, pre-washed (knit or woven)

Bring your own machine in good, working condition or rent a classroom machine.

What we'll work on:

Threading practice, Finishing tips and tricks- practice different ways of finishing edges, pattern recommendations, fabric choices, needles and thread, etc.

Make a pair of underwear! (Ann Tilley Everyday Undies pattern bundle provided)

Bring your own projects to ask questions and trouble shoot regarding serger basics. Bring already cut out items to serge together. We will work on making basics and planning serger projects.

Some “homework” might be helpful- like pre-washing fabric, finishing techniques on the regular machine, practicing sewing after hours, cutting out patterns.

*Differential feed will not be covered in this workshop- we will be keeping the setting on our machines at the same place the whole time.
